Time to say goodbye to Asia – Au revoir l’Asie…

Here we are, and it’s already time to say goodbye to Asia… In less than 24 hours, our trip we’ll be over and we’ll be on a plane back to Europe. Time to review our motives and what we’ve accomplished here…

Time to say goodbye to Asia… This is why we came / Au revoir l’Asie et pourquoi nous sommes venus

Our destination and goal was Hong Kong.
Why ? So far, our trips have been part of a bigger scheme, one that I will call “Simone’s plan to conquer the world”. When we met, he was a few months away from leaving Paris to discover parts of the world he hadn’t seen. He ended up staying until I was ready to go with him. Traveling is one of the foremost things that brought us together, so it goes without saying that we would go together practically anywhere. After the US, the next step was Asia. Simone had seen none of it, while I had some traveling experience in this part of the world. So we decided to go to Hong Kong where Simone would get a working visa. We’d say 6 months until I had university obligations drawing us back to Paris.

How did it start… / Comment ça a commencé…

Tokyo la nuit

Tokyo la nuit

Thanks to Simone’s cousin who works for an airline company, we’ve had the incredible chance to fly stand-by, at a price defying your wildest dreams. To do so however, we had to land in Tokyo. As great news can apparently follow each others, a Japanese backpacker I had met 7 years ago in Brugge offered to lend us her apartment in the heart of Tokyo. Our few days in this city were really incredible, even though the jetlag was killing us. I felt once again the excitment and the pleasure to be there, still as strong and heartwarming as it had been during my first time year, almost 10 years ago. As I speak Japanese and know the place and customs, I felt incredibly “at home”.

Welcome to chaos : Hong Kong / Bienvenue à  Hong Kong : le chaos

Hong Kong la nuit

Hong Kong la nuit

Saying that the dirty chaos of Hong Kong was a contrast from the proper and organized city that is Tokyo would be the understatement of the year. We went through a total paradigmatic shift. It was like being upside down. But we wanted to experience this, so we went on with enthusiasm. We kept our calm when understanding we were staying in the worst place in Hong Kong, in the smallest room I had ever seen in my life (we used to live very comfortably in 10m square, we’re not the luxury kind). We pretended that we were not seeing the guys smoking crack on the second floor and weren’t bothered by the people continuously asking us about drugs every time we left our floor. We met people Simone might work with and they were really cool! We treated ourselves with maki from the supermarket in our room for dinner, did shots like teenagers when Simone got a bottle of whiskey for free after attending a master class and played crazy UNO games.

But when it became clear that the visa wouldn’t come, it was also time to admit we hated it there. We both found the city ugly and incredibly dirty. As our goal was very far from partying all the time and spending all the money we had or we’d get, there was no appeal to be here for us. This city was just incredibly expensive, and nothing we hoped for.

What to do, then ? / Alors que faire ?

The view from the Peak

The view from the Peak

We thought about visiting Vietnam, Cambodge and Thailand. After all, Simone wanted to discover Asia, and we wouldn’t mind the sun and the beach.
But after talking it through, the need to work and save some money for our next journey was bigger. We agreed that our trip to Asia was not meant to be only vacation. The trip we had imagined and wanted was no more, and couldn’t be anymore, not this time.
So we went to see the most beautiful things Hong Kong had to offer before packing our bags for good.

Back to the Promised Land: Tokyo / Retour en terre promise : Tokyo

I can’t say that I was sorry to get back to Tokyo. Simone sure wasn’t either. There must be something in the air in this place… it just makes me feel happy. Go figure.
This time, we booked an apartment through Airbnb (and the price was almost half our little room’s in HK, just saying…) in the periphery of Tokyo. We took our time to go visit places that were really dreamy, and took some time to rest. We just savored our moments in Tokyo, whatever the way we spent them. Mostly, stuffing our face with incredibly cheap but delicious udon…

Yummy!

Yummy!

The end: time to say goodbye to Asia / La fin : au revoir l’Asie…

As I write, I am comfortably sitting in my capsule in a hostel in Tokyo. Simone is getting some rest in his own, under mine. During our trip in the US, he became sick a few days before the end, during our three days in Los Angeles before going back to Paris. And as you might have guessed: he has been sick for the last two days. We caught a cold when talking in Shibuya a couple days ago… If he didn’t have a very real fever, I would call it a beautiful clinical case of chronic « I-don’t-want-to-leave”… But what I know for sure, is that I don’t want to leave either. Not to worry, I am planning to come back, much longer than that! And this time, I hope that Simone will see a bit more of Asia’s endemic wonders.

Takaosanguchi

Takaosanguchi – perfect memory to say goodbye to Asia… for now!

What now ? / Et maintenant ?

Now, we’re going back to Rome. Then Paris. Not for more than a month in total. Then… somewhere else. In Europe. We don’t yet know where exactly. We have to find a place where the rent prices are not going through the roof (pun half-intended) and where Simone can work as a bartender while I finish writing my masters dissertation… So if you’ve got bar work anywhere in Europe (not Paris and Rome): send us an email and we’ll take the first flight (or bus, knowing ourselves)!

Maintenant, nous retournons à Rome. Puis Paris.

I think there’s no point in forcing yourself to like a place. Hong Kong rent prices are insane. I remember being in complete shock when I went there for the first time. I ended up staying in a place called something-mansion (sorry I forgot), did you stay there as well by any chance? All I remember is having to queue up for the lift for like 10 minutes every time I wanted to get to my room. It’s like a kinda dodgy looking hotel-complex. Basically a high rise building filled with overpriced guesthouses. Can’t say I was the biggest fan of the place haha. I quite enjoyed the rest of Hong Kong though, but accommodation really sucks there.

That’s hilarious ! You were in Chungking Mansions, and so were we !! The only time we took the elevator was when we arrived with our big backpacks. After that, we strictly took the stairs to our room on the 6th floor. Which gave us the incredible opportunity (ahem) to say hi to the guys doing crack all day and night on the 2nd floor, and learn how to hold our breath for a few floors….
The tourist stuff we did in Hong Kong though were pretty cool, I totally agree. But I would really not live there given the choice… So it’s good it didn’t happen, after all 😉

Interesting contrast of Toyko to Hong Kong. I have not been to either, yet. They are both on my travel wish list.

As you can imagine, I would definitely recommend Tokyo first 😉
