How to be comatose in New Orleans (no alcohol needed!)

We arrived Sunday morning in New Orleans, after a very long bus ride. Not surprisingly, we were exhausted when we arrived. It took us a trolley ride and a bus ride to get to our hotel and of course we were too early to check in so we just left our bags and went to get breakfast.
We might have been too exhausted to really appreciate it, but right away the architecture of New Orleans made us feel like we were in a totally different place than what we’d seen before. Louisiana definitely has its own feel.

The closest place that was open for breakfast was called Horns. We had funny things to say about it, but everything was lost when Alice broke her  phone recently and, therefore, lost the notes that were saved inside… It was the kind of place you see in the movies, with waitresses in uniform and quiet private booths and cute tables.

After this, we walked to the French Quarter to see what the fuss was about and even if it was early morning, it was already filled with life and we could easily imagine how it would be at night. We tried to take in all the beauty and the particularity of the place before we collapsed of tiredness.

a street in NOLA To save us from falling asleep on the street, we decided to keep the tradition alive and found the nearest cinema. We decided on the Cinema on Canal, where we watched the latest Ice Age on rocking chairs from which we could have ordered pretty much anything to eat and be served. We’re pretty sure that we were somewhat supposed to order things, but as we were broke as f*** this was not going to happen!! Also we were so tired, just the thought of food made us shiver…

After the movie, it was all about waiting for check-in time so we stayed a bit in the mall of the cinema where there was wifi, and finally made it to our bed…….. and slept!

For five hours.
Pendant cinq heures.

As we are very basic human beings, our next move was to get some food in our belly. Comfort cheap food was on the menu for us, so we went to the closest Japanese restaurant to get our fill of avocado maki!

Street of Nola

Alice walking in NOLA

Bourbon Street, Baby!

No trip to New Orleans (at least no ‘first-time’ trip) could be complete without visiting its most (in)famous street : Bourbon Street. We knew from TV, documentaries, hear-say etc. that this street would be packed, and wild. It’s absolutely true, and you can add « strongly stinking of vomit ». The stench of dozens of people puking on the street every night must have permeated every inch of macadam….
When you’re sober, it’s extremely interesting from a sociological point of view. When you’re drunk, it must be hilarious and exhilarating (also, nauseating when you’re too drunk!).

We really didn’t feel like drinking that night, so we saved the experience for the next days and took the little streets back to our hotel to sleep.

But we did make an interesting little video that will showcase it, with commentaries from Simone in Italian (with English subtitles!) :

On Monday, our exhaustion due to the bus trip had not passed and Simone had a bad headache so we stayed in bed until late. In the beginning of the afternoon, Simone went to buy us some delicious vegan food at the grocery store while Alice was getting some work done. In the meantime, our friends Olivier and William agreed to host us when we’d be in Santa Cruz and Sacramento respectively, so we were getting very excited to get to the West Coast!

Around 6pm we followed the advice of Regina’s husband who is originally from New Orleans and went uptown. We took the « St. Charles Streetcar », which was pretty damn cool!

We have to admit that this part of town is completely different from the French Quarter, and we liked it! The surroundings were very beautiful and calmer. We stopped in a restaurant where Alice got a veggie burger and Simone tasted a Po’boys, the typical Louisiana sandwich. We walked for a while in the hope of finding something interesting to see and finally bumped into Oak Street

Oak Street

As it was Monday night, there was not a lot of places open but we’ve liked what we’ve seen! After going down the street, we decided on a small café called Z’OTZ to stop and relax a bit. We chose well, this supernatural themed café was really nice, had plenty of games and books for people to have an amazing time. If you’re around, we recommend you have a look!

Around 10pm we got back on the Trolley towards the French Quarter. We passed by St. Peter street to check Pat O’Brien (house of the Hurricane) and Preservation Hall (Jazz dub). Next, we entered Marie Laveau’s House of Voodoo shop where we bought a couple of postcards before wandering the cute (and sometimes creepy) streets back to our hotel for the night.

How to forget all about your cool plans in nola….
Comment dire adieu à tous vos super plans à la Nouvelle Orléans

Tuesday 26th was a very unlucky day. We had put our bets on this day to cross everything from our NOLA bucket list: do an official haunted tour of the city, drink a hurricane at Pat O’Brien, listen to some Jazz at Preservation Hall, get wasted in Bourbon Street…
But worst than the weariness we felt, is that it was pouring rain outside. US in NOLAMaybe if we were feeling peachy, we would have braved it and scratched at least a couple things off the list. But as the day passed, the rain did not, and we couldn’t bring ourselves to leave the comfort of our bed to get drunk outside (bear with us, we’d been on the road for a month and a half already, traveling almost exclusively by bus…).  So we made peace with not being perfect globetrotter and cuddled in bed instead (that alternative wasn’t too bad, see!).

Haha you rarely hear of people traveling there and not drinking, but it sounds like you had an amazing time. Also, I totally understand the dilemma of trying to be a good traveler and “seize the day” but once you’ve been on the road for a month or two, you get soooo tired. I started purposefully scheduling in a lazy day in a few of our spots so that there would be enough tim.e

You obviously didn’t need alcohol to have a great time though! 🙂
